Our Story

A young parish with deep roots

Divine Mercy Catholic Church serves the growing community of Okponglo, East Legon: families who have made this part of Accra their home, together with students and staff from the university neighbourhood that surrounds us.

What began as a gathering of the faithful for Sunday Mass has grown into a full parish life: two Sunday Masses, daily Eucharist, catechesis for every age, and more than a dozen societies and ministries. Raising this church has been the work of this generation of parishioners, and the building project continues: drainage, the car park and a basement for our children.

We are a parish of the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, in communion with our Archbishop and with the universal Church.

The Early Days

How it began

The founding members, the first church, and the societies that grew up around it.

From the parish’s own albums. If you can name a face or an occasion, the parish office would be glad to hear from you.

Our Patron

The Divine Mercy devotion

Our name comes from the revelations given to Saint Faustina Kowalska, a Polish religious sister, between 1931 and 1938, and from the image she was asked to have painted.

The Image

Christ raises His right hand in blessing; from His heart flow two rays, one pale and one red. He explained them to St. Faustina as the water which makes souls righteous, and the blood which is the life of souls. Those two rays are the colours of this parish.

The Hours of Grace

Two evenings each month are given to the mercy of God: the Hour of Grace on the first Sunday and the Moment of Grace on the second, both at 7:00 PM. The whole parish is welcome at each.

The Feast

Divine Mercy Sunday, the Second Sunday of Easter, is our patronal feast, kept in the whole Church since the year 2000. It is preceded in our parish by the nine-day Novena beginning on Good Friday.

Our Mission

To receive mercy, and to become it

To gather the faithful of Okponglo, East Legon around the Eucharist; to form disciples through sound catechesis and the sacraments; and to send them out to practise the corporal and spiritual works of mercy in their homes, workplaces and neighbourhoods.

Our Vision

A parish that no one leaves unknown

A church building worthy of the Blessed Sacrament, a parish register in which every family is known and cared for, active societies for every age, and a reputation in this community for compassion: that Divine Mercy is where the poor, the sick and the stranger are received.
